After a Successful Drug Rehab Program, You May Experience Relapse
That’s great! You have successfully finished an extensive drug rehab program. Now, you are ready to face an entire new world of possibilities. Unfortunately, one of these possibilities is a relapse, or a slip. In a recent report, more than 90 percent of those trying to stay sober have experienced at least one relapse before achieving total sobriety.
A relapse does not begin abruptly when you try out a drink or drug “just one more time.” It is actually a gradual series of changes in attitudes, feelings, and behaviors that lead to picking up a drug. Here are a few indicators of a relapse that may happen some time after completing a drug rehab program.
1. You think that after undergoing a drug rehab program, you can now have more control over yourself. Therefore, you would think that one dose of a drug wouldn’t hurt. However, that is actually a gateway to relapse.
2. You begin to experience a lot of tress due to a change in circumstances. Facing the new world after the rehabilitation is quite frightening and confusing, presenting a lot of stressful situations.
3. You start to reactivate your denial. Not denial that you have a drug problem but denial that stress is the cause of your problems. You begin to persuade yourself that everything is okay even though it is not. You are scared and worried, but you do not acknowledge those feelings. You do not share your denials to your family or friends.
4. You start to look at taking drugs as a solution to anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, memory loss, and other withdrawal symptoms. This is quite dangerous because you may be tempted to self-medicate through the drugs that you are actually trying to avoid.
5. Because you are trying to deal with the stress, your behavior begins to alter. You may practice avoidance, or become self-defensive in situations that call for an honest assessment of your behavior. You begin to exhibit poor judgment, making on-the-spot decisions without thinking things through.
6. You may feel uncomfortable around sober people, fearing they might discriminate or alienate you for being in a drug rehab center. You refuse to socialize and withdraw from your family members.
