Tips About FSH and Fertility
The linkage between FSH and fertility is something that many couples considering IVF treatment only a bit understand. But in order to create in your own mind what treatment is best for your body so as to increase your chances of conceiving a baby you actually need to know how this aspect of your body works. So here is a straightforward reason.
FSH governs the production of eggs in females and sperm in males, and a dearth of quantity or quality in either may make that couple infertile. FSH readings are invariably taken on women undergoing or considering IVF treatment, and so this article makes reference to ladies instead of men.
We are basically engaged with just two body organs – your hypothalamus gland and your pituitary gland. Your hypothalamus gland has been likened to a thermostat, except that instead of monitoring temperature it monitors your hormone level. This gland, at the correct time in each menstrual cycle, releases a hormone called the gonadotropin releasing hormone ( GnRH ), which in turn has effects on the pituitary gland.
The pituitary gland is responsible, among other stuff, for releasing hormones into the body at the required levels, in order to maintain fertility. Presumably the most vital of these hormones is the follicle exciting hormone ( FSH ), and it is this that is released as a consequence of the interplay of the GnRH on your pituitary gland. This FSH then stimulates the ovarian follicles ( which contain the egg cells ) into making the hormones wanted to enable and sustain pregnancy.
When you have difficulty conceiving one of the likely causes is that your pituitary gland is releasing an incorrect quantity of FSH. Hence the need to monitor it. Measurements are routinely taken on the second or 3rd day of your cycle and the reading should be below fifteen mIU/ml.
Between fifteen and twenty-five is outside of the ordinary range but does not necessarily mean you are infertile. Above 25 , however , sometimes does mean you are at least for the present, infertile. Doubtless your pituitary gland is trying, in its own way, to make up for an insufficiency somewhere else. This is mostly in your’ovarian reserve’, i.e. The number and quality of eggs, or reactive follicles, remaining in your ovaries.
If insufficient FSH is being produced it may well mean that your reproductive system is closing down. This happens at the time of the menopause, and can occur earlier if for any basis you become infertile.
If you have got a reading that’s too high or too low all isn’t lost. You shouldn’t depend on just one reading. A second reading should be taken on the second or 3rd day of your cycle by a professional consultant, and you should be conscious of any unusual features of the appliances used, as these can affect readings.
Other kinds of reading should also be taken and considered, for example your estradiol, one of the estrogens produced by your body. Together, these readings can show you and your consultant where the issues lie that are causing you problems in conceiving.
remember, though, that there are a number of possible causes and solutions to consider. Your reproductive system is frail and simply upset by external factors. For example, diet and fertility have been demonstrated to be closely bound together, as well as your exercise habits ( or lack of them ) and your lifestyle in general.
You and your consultant must decide what the best plan is. It may be IVF treatment, an IUI course, or possibly a change in your way of life so as to bring your body back from the edge and towards its natural state of fertility.
